The operator of this particular type of forklift generally stands up inside a small cockpit. The stand-up design allows the narrow aisle forklift to be as narrow ans short as possible. A stand-up cockpit forklift normally has three tires: two in the front, and one in the back. This configuration enables for fast and easy maneuvering. There are several versions of these forklifts which are available with a sit-down cockpit. The lift attachment is capable of pivoting to the sides, permitting the lift to be operated without the operator having to reposition the whole machine. The sit-down version normally has four wheels.

Electric-powered equipment are not noisy and do not make exhaust fumes, making them the preferred option for closed areas like retail spaces. Several lifts come with a gas engine or a diesel engine.
