Lift Truck Parts in More Detail

There are hundreds of parts that make up a lift truck. The forklifts major components include the frame of the truck, the engine components, the tilt cylinders, the overhead guard and the wheels. Moreover, a forklift has various types of attachments. All the parts making up a forklift are all essential as they work together to make the equipment's operation possible. The next paragraphs describe several of the forklift parts in detail.

The Overhead Guard - The overhead guard is actually the forklifts metal roof, which sits atop the operator cab. It's job is to protect the operator while they are using the equipment. The overhead guard ensures that nothing falling from above onto the truck will damage the controls inside the cab or hurt the operator. The overhead guard is essential to the frame assembly on some models.

The Mast - Mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle, the mast is the vertical lift truck part made of interlocking rails. The mast enables the forks to move up and down whilst providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails could either have bushings or bushings as guides. There are a couple of ways the mast could be operated: chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor or hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders.

Forklift Carriage - the forks and other kinds of attachments are mounted to the carriage. The carriage is connected to the mast directly to the hydraulic cylinder or it is attached by chains. To be able to allow the forks to be lowered and raised, the carriage may have either rollers or bushings to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.

Load Back Rest - When the carriage is lifted to full height, there is a back rest made of metal which keeps a load from falling backwards. The back rest is either bolted or welded on to the carriage.

Forklift Attachments - a variety of attachments can be fixed to the front of the lift truck. The most common attachment is forks. Additionally, there are L-shaped members, rollers, rotators, roll clamps, pole handlers and so forth. These different types of attachments are really handy for moving different kinds of loads.
