There are 7 different classifications of lift trucks as determined by the ITA or Industrial Truck Association. These classes are divided into the type of work setting; indoors, outdoors, rough or smooth surfaces and narrow aisle; whether the operator is standing or sitting down; by the type of engine; and lastly the machine characteristics, regarding the maximum grade and tire type. Some of the categories are further sub-divided by operating characteristics. Below are the following classes of forklifts:

Category 1 Forklifts: these equipment comprise electric motor trucks that utilize either air filled or pneumatic tires or cushion tires. The Class 1 forklifts also consist of 4 lift codes, or subcategories that are:

Lift Code 1: Stand-up, counterbalanced rider model.

Lift Code 4: 3-Wheel electric sit-down units.

Lift Code 5: Counterbalanced rider, cushion tire sit down tires.

Lift Code 6: Includes pneumatic tire models, sit-down rider, and counterbalanced rider.

Category 2 Forklifts: Class 2 lift trucks consist of narrow aisle electric trucks with solid tires.

Class 3 Forklifts: The class 3 lift truck will consist of all hand/rider trucks fuel and electric based with solid tires.

Class 4 Forklifts: The Internal Combustion or IC models make up Class 4 forklifts. These are sit down rider forklifts with cushion tires. Generally, they are suitable for applications on hard surfaces and indoor application.

Class 5 Forklifts: Class 5 is Internal Combustion Engine sit down rider forklifts outfitted with pneumatic tires. Typically, these models are great for working on rough surfaces outside or on areas with significant inclines.

Category 6 Forklifts: Class 6 forklifts will consist of IC powered or electric models. These ride-on models can tow at least 1000 pounds. This specific category is engineered and designed to tow cargo as opposed to lift it.

Category 7 Forklifts: This class is defined as rough terrain trucks with pneumatic tires. The Category 7 forklifts are powered by diesel engines and are almost exclusively used outdoors.

The various classes of lift trucks help to keep them separated and organized. Different types of working environments depend on various classes in order to get their work completed. Forklifts are quite particular in their lifting and loading capacities. Their different kinds of engines and tires are made for particular applications. In order to pick the right forklift to meet your requirements and to fulfill your jobs, do some research to know exactly what you will require from your specific model.
